Plumber pricing Paris: how to read and understand an invoice
You just received a plumber's invoice and you are not sure the price is justified? You are not alone. Plumbing pricing is often opaque, and scams unfortunately exist in Paris. This guide explains exactly how an intervention's price is structured.

How is a plumber's rate calculated in Paris?
Travel fee
Most plumbers charge a travel fee, which varies with the intervention zone. This fee covers the technician's trip to your home. At Réseau Tubulure, travel is charged separately: €90 excl. VAT in Paris, €115 in Hauts-de-Seine (92), €125 in Seine-Saint-Denis (93) and Val-de-Marne (94).
Labour
The main item on your invoice. Charged either by hourly rate (at Réseau Tubulure, €79 to €80 excl. VAT per hour per person) or as a flat rate for standardised work.
Supplies and parts
Replacement parts (seals, taps, traps, hoses, cartridges) are billed in addition to labour. A serious plumber details each part with its reference and unit price. Beware of invoices grouping everything under a vague 'various supplies' line.
Legitimate surcharges
- Night surcharge (after 8pm or before 7am): between 25 and 50 percent
- Weekend and public holiday surcharge: same range
- Parking fees if applicable
- Commissioning fee for new equipment
These surcharges must be indicated in the initial quote, never discovered on the final invoice.

- Hidden water leak detection: €250 excl. VAT non-invasive, €450 to €560 excl. VAT invasive, €680 to €740 excl. VAT under tiles
- Wall-mounted electric water heater replacement: €850 to €1,750 excl. VAT depending on size (30 L to 150 L)
- Night or weekend emergency: 25 to 50 percent surcharge on base rate

What a plumber's invoice must contain
- Company name and contact details (SIRET, address)
- Intervention date
- Detail of services rendered
- HT unit price of each service
- Applicable VAT rate (10 percent for renovation, 20 percent for new)
- TTC total
If your invoice does not contain these elements, you are entitled to contest it and request written rectification.
Most frequent pricing scams in Paris
Unconfirmed verbal quote
A plumber who refuses to confirm their rate in writing before intervening is a red flag. Always require a written quote or SMS confirmation before validating the intervention.
Hourly billing without cap
Some providers bill hourly without telling you the estimated duration. Systematically request a forecast duration and maximum amount before work begins.
Overvalued replacement parts
Some plumbers bill standard parts at prices two or three times market price. Do not hesitate to request the exact reference and compare with public prices.
Hidden fees at end of intervention
Cleaning fees, waste disposal fees, file fees: these unannounced items are not legitimate. You can refuse them.
How to compare rates before choosing a plumber?
- Request at least two written quotes before any non-urgent intervention
- Verify quotes cover exactly the same service
- Check provider is properly registered (SIRET verifiable on societe.com)
- Consult Google reviews to verify consistency of prices charged
VAT: what rate applies for plumbing work?
- VAT at 10 percent: renovation, maintenance and repair work in a home over 2 years old
- VAT at 20 percent: new installations, complete system replacement, construction
Frequently asked questions
Can a plumber bill without having established a quote?
For any service over 150 EUR, the provider must establish a written quote before intervening (Article L.111-1 of the Consumer Code). Below this threshold, verbal agreement legally suffices.
Can you negotiate intervention price?
Yes, especially for planned work. Negotiation is more difficult in emergency situations. For major work, always request multiple quotes.
What to do if I dispute an invoice?
Start by contacting the provider in writing for explanations. If the dispute persists, you can refer to the consumer mediator or file a complaint with the DGCCRF.
