No heating: 4 checks before you call

1. The pressure on the gauge: 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Below that, the boiler locks out; topping up the pressure often fixes it.
2. The boiler's breaker in the fuse box: reset it once. If it trips again, leave it.
3. The thermostat: set above room temperature, "away" mode off, fresh batteries if it is wireless.
4. The reset button: write down the error code first, then reset once. If the boiler locks out again, call us with that code.

Smell of gas: what to do

Open the windows, do not touch any switch, turn off the gas at the meter, get out and call the gas emergency line (Urgence Sécurité Gaz, GRDF) on 0 800 47 33 33, free and 24 hours a day. The heating engineer comes once the area is safe (smell of gas: what to do right away).

The annual boiler service

In France, gas, oil and wood boilers from 4 to 400 kW must be serviced every year (decree no. 2009-649 of 9 June 2009). The heating engineer cleans and adjusts the boiler, checks the safety devices and measures carbon monoxide. You receive a maintenance certificate within 15 days; keep it for at least two years, as your insurer may ask for it after a claim.

In a rented flat, the annual service is the tenant's responsibility. Autumn, before the heating season, is the best time (gas boiler servicing in Paris).

Cold radiators or radiators that heat badly

1. Cold at the top, warm at the bottom: air in the system. Bleeding fixes it, then the boiler pressure needs topping up.
2. Cold at the bottom, warm at the top: sludge has settled. Flushing (désembouage) cleans the whole system.
3. Only one radiator cold: often a stuck thermostatic valve, freed or replaced.

Repair or replace the boiler?

A well-serviced boiler usually lasts 15 to 20 years. Beyond that, if breakdowns keep coming back or parts are no longer available, replacing it makes more sense than another repair. The heating engineer gives you both options and their prices; you decide (repair or replace your boiler).

Heating in a Paris apartment

1. Wall-mounted boiler in the kitchen or a cupboard, with a balanced flue or a shared flue in older buildings: access and flue gas extraction are checked on every visit.
2. Shared heating: if the whole building is cold, the managing agent (syndic) calls out its own heating engineer. If only your flat is cold, the fault is on your side and we can help (inadequate shared heating: your options).
3. Hard water: Paris water scales up the boiler's heat exchanger over time. Regular servicing limits the loss of efficiency.
